Split your list three ways:
- DIY: jobs where a mistake costs you nothing but time: tightening hardware, caulking a tub, swapping cabinet pulls, touch-up paint you already own.
- Handyman: jobs that need the right tools, a second pair of hands, or experience to avoid a callback: doors that need planing, tile repair, fence sections, garage door openers, fixture swaps.
- Specialist: anything behind the meter, under a slab, or on a steep roof: full panel work, slab leaks, structural roofing. A good handyman will tell you when a job belongs here.
The math most people miss: the trip, not the task
A 20-minute repair is never a 20-minute job for a pro, because there's drive time to your home and back on top of it. That's why reputable handymen in DFW carry a service minimum (ours is $90). The way to win on that math is simple: batch the list. Five small jobs in one visit spreads the trip across all of them and usually costs far less than five separate visits, or five weekends of your own.
Why flat fees beat hourly
Hourly billing makes you pay for surprises. A flat fee quoted up front puts the risk on the pro to estimate right, and it gives you a number you can say yes or no to before anyone lifts a tool. When you call around, ask for a flat price on your list. If someone will only quote hourly with no cap, keep calling.
